Belgian Formula Renault 1.6 - 23.04.2007 Glorious shunshine and a full house for the second round of the Championship at Zolder. This round was part of the World Series by Renault with o.a. also the Eurocup F. Renault 2.0. With free access and a demonstration of the championship winning Renault F1 car a crowd of 98.000 turned up for the event. QUALIFYING Due to the busy schedule there was only 1 qualifying session. Karline Stala ended up P4, 0.4 sec. off pole. However all the time was being lost in the first sector and more specifically the first 2 corners of the circuit. As in the first round a fortnight ago she was quickest in the second part of the circuit. Jack Piper was able to chip some more time off as he had been doing in the free practice the day before. RACE 1 Karline was able to hang on to P4 in the opening laps. When Stechelariu got a drive through penalty for jumping the start we were promoted to P3. In the final 3 laps she was much quicker that P2, Niels Cox. However Cox by moving accross at the right time managed to keep Karline behind and so they crossed the line with Karline right under Niels' gearbox. Jack made good use of the extra track time and got even closer to the pace of the leaders. RACE 2 With no tv-pictures available to see the opening laps all we know is that Karline came through still in P4, her starting position. She lost a place to Cox early on but then was able to follow the cars in front of her with relative ease. At about mid-race the safety car had to come out. When the race was ago again the leaders, Hauser and De Maersschalck both dispappeared from the race after a coming togehter and Karline got by De Saeger to come through P2, again under the gearbox of Cox. Unfortunately, as in the first race she didn't find a way past him. With another podium finish she took the lead in the championship!!! Jack again made good use of the extra mileage and with a time of 1.42.6 got to within 2.5 seconds of the quickest lap in the race! Well done, Jack! |
